Packaging Reminders
Every day, countless items are damaged or destroyed because of inadequate packaging or crating by careless or cheap packing companies. By utilizing Shipping Done Right, clients can rest assured that each shipment will receive personal and professional care.
It is very important to securely package your items for transit, as the shipping environment is notorious for rough handling. Packages less than 150 lbs. must be able to travel through numerous conveyor systems, withstand a 30 foot drop, and still be intact. We always suggest palletizing items over 150 lbs., especially when you have multiple pieces, as it typically costs less to ship a freight shipment, than shipping per-piece.
For maximum protection, cardboard boxes should never be reused; Thickness of boxes should depend on weight of the item your boxing. Use a quality new box or one in good shape. Corrugated boxes come in different thickness, single wall, double wall, triple wall etc. Always use a double wall or greater thickness if your item is fragile or heavy to protect the contents in transit.
Wood crates are the safest way to transport any item during shipping. Crates can be made to any size, can be packed any way and can hold almost any weight. The more solid the objects are inside the less likely damage would occur. All items should be wrapped, and packed separate from one another in bubble wrap, paper, cloth, packing peanuts, and even expandable foam. Always pack items in box firmly, with appropriate spacing between box walls, and objects inside.
Bear in mind when shipping via air or ocean, the dimensions of your shipment may determine the costs to ship it. Whenever possible, keep your package within 4 inches all the way around each dimension to include bubble wrap / paper wrap / peanuts or your shipment could be over dimensional costing more to ship.
Never mix breakables with non-breakables, if you have no choice, always put the heavy items at the bottom, and put efficient packing between the two items. Firm packing decreases the chance of internal damage, never pack items so tight they try to break your container apart. Rattles or movement means there is too much spacing, and your item needs more packing.
Always provide a shipping label on the outside of your package with the person's name, address, and a contact number to insure proper delivery. It is also a good idea to provide a ship from label to let the person know who is shipping to them. Place the shipping labels the same way you would address an envelope... placing the “To” information in the center of the package. If you are sending multiple packages to one address, label each box in a series, (1 of 14 etc.) to insure all packages arrive together on time. Listing a phone number is very important for in the unfortunate event one of your packages is misplaced, they can easily locate the receiver and notify them.
Use a good strong tape to assemble boxes, and seal them. We do not recommend scotch tape, or masking tape for it does not have enough bonding strength. We recommend packaging tape, Duct tape, or industrial strength clear tape that’s 2-4 ml thick. If your shipment is fragile, we suggest marking it Fragile! Remove any old labels or stickers that do not relate to this shipment, or the items inside. And never mark what the internal contents are on the outside of your package. Use a packing list if that is something the receiver needs to know.

General Packing Tips
Pack as much as you can into boxes. This will provide greater protection for your belongings and will make loading your crate(s) much easier. Unusually shaped items take up more space and make loading more difficult. Packing and padding your items are keys to having a successful move. Don't skimp on packing supplies. They are far cheaper than broken or damaged belongings. Please keep in mind that R+L Carrier trailers are not air-ride. Start packing several weeks before your move date, taking it one room at a time. Begin with things you use less frequently, such as books and knick-knacks. Pack each room in separate boxes and label each box with its contents.
Reinforce the bottom of all boxes with tape. Fill each box to its capacity, using paper or fillers to eliminate empty spaces. The top and sides of each box shouldn't bulge, nor should they cave in when closed. Pack heavy items, such as books, in smaller boxes. Keep the weight of each box down to a manageable level. Leave lightweight linens and clothing in their drawers. Pack extra linens, pillows and stuffed animals in large garbage bags and tape closed. Plan to use these bags as cushions or fillers in your crate. Disassemble any items you can. Be aware of items with sharp corners or projections and keep them from puncturing or scratching other objects. Pack your valuables and essentials separately and plan on keeping these items with you.
Furniture Moving Tips
Wrap with blankets or bubble wrap. Secure padding to furniture. Do not use tape directly on wood or painted surfaces. Remove legs from furniture if possible. Place wing nuts or screws in envelopes or plastic bags and tape to underside of furniture. Next, coat fine wood furnishings with wax to protect against scratches that may occur during transit. Place all “sofa” cushions and pillows in bags to use as pads or fillers in the crate. Move dressers with contents in drawers to avoid repacking. Secure drawers from opening during transit. If you are moving a piano, consider hiring a specialist to pack and load it.
Electronics Moving Tips
Whenever possible use original shipping boxes for computers, printers and other electronic items. You might even consider double boxing. Follow manufacturer's instructions for moving when available. Immobilize moving parts and remove all detachable cables and wires. Color code or label wiring for easier reinstallation. Tape electrical cords to back of appliance to prevent plug damage and wrap each piece with bubble wrap. CDs and software do not survive high temperatures. If you are shipping your goods during the warmer seasons, consider keeping these items with you.
Major Appliances Moving Tips
Clean and dry all appliances at least 24 hours before your move date. Consider using empty space in your appliances to move lightweight or crushable items. Remove broiler pan and racks from your oven. Tape burners or coil elements to the top of your stove and tape down all knobs. Disconnect and empty all washing machine hoses and store them inside the machine. Immobilize the tub with a brace or by placing towels between the tub and sidewall. Tape electrical cords to each appliance and tape all doors and lids closed.
Dishes and Glassware Packing Tips
Wrap breakables in tissue paper and use newspaper to fill extra spaces in boxes. Pack plates on their edges. Consider using potholders and dishtowels to cushion the bottom and sides of your boxes. For greater protection, consider purchasing extra "Dish Saver Kits". Fine silver should be wrapped in cloth or silver paper.
Lamps and Decor Packing and Moving Tips
Remove all bulbs and shades from lamps. Pack in sturdy cartons labeled "fragile". Wrap each wall hanging individually with bubble wrap, blankets, or towels. Pack flat items on their edges. For large mirrors or pictures, cover both sides with bubble wrap and heavy cardboard, and then bind with tape.
Lawn and Garage Items; Packing Tips
Drain all gasoline and oil from lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws and other equipment. Empty propane tanks from barbecue grill and properly purge hose. Secure lid and immobilize moving parts. Strap long garden tools together into a bundle. Pack heavy power tools into small sturdy boxes and fill spaces with newspaper.
